Background of the Study
Digital health technologies, including electronic health records (EHRs), telemedicine, and mobile health applications, are revolutionizing healthcare delivery by improving efficiency, accuracy, and patient outcomes. Nurses, as frontline healthcare providers, are integral to the successful adoption and utilization of these technologies (World Health Organization [WHO], 2023).
At the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital, the introduction of digital health technologies has enhanced access to patient data, streamlined care processes, and supported decision-making. However, despite these benefits, nurses encounter numerous challenges, including limited training, resistance to change, and infrastructure inadequacies, which hinder the full realization of digital health’s potential (Aliyu et al., 2024).
This study evaluates the challenges faced by nurses in using digital health technologies at the hospital, with the goal of identifying barriers and proposing solutions to optimize their adoption and usage.
Statement of the Problem
The integration of digital health technologies is essential for improving healthcare delivery in Nigeria. However, nurses at the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital face persistent challenges in adopting these technologies. Factors such as inadequate training, technical difficulties, and a lack of institutional support have been cited as barriers to effective utilization.
These challenges not only compromise the quality of patient care but also contribute to stress and dissatisfaction among nurses. Addressing these issues requires a comprehensive understanding of the challenges and their underlying causes.
Objectives of the Study
1. To identify the challenges faced by nurses in using digital health technologies at University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital.
2. To assess the impact of these challenges on nursing practices and patient care.
3. To propose strategies for overcoming barriers to the effective use of digital health technologies by nurses.
Research Questions
1. What challenges do nurses face in using digital health technologies at University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital?
2. How do these challenges affect nursing practices and patient care?
3. What strategies can be implemented to address these challenges?
Research Hypotheses
1. Nurses encounter significant challenges in using digital health technologies.
2. The identified challenges negatively impact the quality of nursing care and patient outcomes.
3. Implementing targeted strategies can significantly reduce these challenges.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study focuses on nurses at the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital who use digital health technologies. It excludes other healthcare providers and administrative staff. Limitations include potential bias in self-reported challenges and the exclusion of technological manufacturers' perspectives.
